FROM THE GROUND UP
WHAT MAKES UP THE MEAT OF AN ATHLETE?
In the feature documentary FROM THE GROUND UP, former meat-eating college football player Santino Panico goes on a journey to rediscover the athlete within—this time, as a vegan. As he meets with vegetarian and vegan elite competitors, this story about food and sport expands to confront the social norms and far-reaching impacts of food choices.
WHAT IS PLANT-Based?
In FROM THE GROUND UP, several of the subjects use the term "PLANT-BASED." In the context of this film, the term "PLANT-BASED" applies to both vegetarian and vegan diets. It does not apply to meat-eating diets, including pescetarian (a diet consisting of plant-foods, fish, and sometimes dairy).
A VEGETARIAN diet consists of primarily plant foods, including grains, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, fruits and vegetables, but also includes some dairy and egg products.
A VEGAN diet consists of only plant foods, excluding all animal by-products. The diet is made up of grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, fruits, and vegetables.
